Build Your Vocabulary Fast

Speaking is an essential component of everyday life! We have the uncanny and unique ability to express ourselves through the art of language and words; something that differentiates us from the other inhabitants of our universe (although other inhabitant have their own ways of communicating). As humans, we orbit a world structured around language and communication, but how do we know what to say and when to say it? Are you content with the way you express your thoughts? Are you looking to build and enhance your vocabulary? Let’s discuss some ways you can start growing your vocabulary today:

READ READ READ!

A writer once said, “The most important thing is to read as much as you can. Like I did. It will give you an understanding of what makes good writing and it will enlarge your vocabulary.” Nuff said, don’t you think? Reading will open you to many words and provide context on any subject matter, ultimately taking your vocabulary usage and skills to the next level. In addition books teach you new ways of thinking, engaging, and imagining, ultimately sharpening your communication skills and giving you a novel view on how you converse with the world.

REFER TO A DICTIONARY.

If you wanted to erect a building, you’d need materials like plans, drills, cranes, concrete, bricks, wood, etcetera. These materials facilitate the construction of that building. In the same vein, to build your vocabulary, you’d need to understand words and what they mean. To do this efficiently, you’d need to make a dictionary your close companion. Learning the meanings of new words, checking how words are used in a sentence, and understanding the roots of words all play an important part in greatly improving your vocabulary.

PRACTICE.

A key way to up the ante on your vocabulary skills is to practice, and the best way to do this is to engage in conversations with other humans. So let’s say you learnt the meaning of the work ‘mellifluous’ today and someone asks, “Did you like that song I sent you?” Rather than say, “yes, I found it very nice”, you could say, “it was absolutely mellifluous.” These bits of practice go a long way in helping you sharpen your vocabulary skills and remember words. Do note that you shouldn’t make a habit of constantly being verbose, tailor your vocabulary to your audience!

SET GOALS.

An important part of building your vocabulary is setting goals to reach and surpass. For instance, you could set a daily, weekly, or monthly goal to learn X amount of words and use Y amount of words in a conversation. Setting goals and keeping track of your progress keeps you motivated and, consequently, in a mood to constantly keep expanding your vocabulary.

ASK QUESTIONS.

One small tip is to ask questions, and stay curious. If your speaking with someone and they say a word you don’t know, tell them. Ask them what the word means, and look it up yourself. The context alone will help you remember and use the word in future conversations.

PLAY WORD GAMES.

There are tons of physical and digital word games you can play to boost your vocabulary! Scrabble is one that comes to mind. If you’re opting for the digital route check out our game Word Tribe on IOS, Android, or Facebook! It focuses on building your vocabulary with puzzles full of synonyms and tools and hints to help you solve them.

TAKEAWAY.

A well developed vocabulary is a tool to help you communicate with many audiences. Nurturing and growing your vocabulary could be an important step in the way you communicate and are listened to by others, ultimately changing the trajectory of both your everyday life and your mind.
